Why test for radon
The U.S. EPA identifies radon as the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers and recommends fixing a home when levels are 4 pCi/L or higher. Radon can be present in any home, new or old, with or without a basement.
How testing works
A short-term radon test generally runs at least 48 hours under closed-house conditions, meaning windows and exterior doors stay shut except for normal entry and exit. Results tell you whether levels are below or above the EPA action level. If a level is high, a radon mitigation contractor can install a system to reduce it.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a radon test if the neighbor's was low?
Yes. Radon levels vary house to house, even on the same street.
What if the result is high?
A mitigation contractor can install a system that vents radon outdoors. We can help you understand the result and next steps.
